National Diploma: Civil/Building Engineering N1-N6   

Overview

The NATED N1-N6 Civil/Building Engineering qualification covers levels N1-N6 and is designed to provide the theory of Civil/Building Engineering and an optional practical component. You can attain a National Certificate or Diploma once you have worked 24 months (2000 working hours) in your field of study. This qualification consist of one compulsory part (N1-N6 theory) and two optional practical parts, beginners level (done between N1-N3) and advanced (done between N4-N6) 

PART 1, N1-N6 Theory (Compulsory)


This part is compulsory. Students are required to complete all their N1-N6 theory subjects to attain their national certificate and diploma.

PART 2, Beginner Practicals (Optional Extra)


You can complete a BEGINNER level, 1 week program of optional practical hours within your field of study. This is done just after either N1 or before N3 and you will be given a certificate and logbook of the components that you have completed. 

PART 3, Advanced Practicals (Optional Extra)


You can complete a ADVANCED level, 1 week program  of optional practical hours within your field of study. This is done just after either N4 or before N6 and you will be given a certificate and logbook of the components that you have completed. Part 2 to be completed first.

Only 2% of all private and public TVET colleges have the facilities and capabilities to offer a practical component with their engineering studies, BUT a staggering 90% of the students that receives practical are employed.

Admission Requirements:

  • N1 Entry Requirement: Grade 9 (Std 7) Certificate with a pass in Mathematics and Physical Science OR
    no formal qualification for everyone 23 years or older.
  • N3 Entry Requirement: Grade 11 (Std 9) Certificate with a pass in Mathematics and Physical Science or N2
  • N4 Entry Requirement: Matric/Grade 12 (with full mathematics and science 40%+ Passrate), or N3 Pass (with mathematics and science)

 

NOTE: Proceed to next level only when the previous level has been successfully completed i.e. N4 for N5, etc.

Qualifications

  • National Certificate: The student will receive a national certificate from the Department of Education if all external department exams are passed. This certificate is not issued by us, but only by the department of education.

 

  • National Diploma: Work for 24 months (2 years) in the Civil Engineering or Built environment industry obtaining relevant experience in at least two of the subjects done in N6, then apply for a National Diploma at the campus where they have studies

PART 2, Basic Practicals Civil/Building (Optional Extra, Done On-Campus)
You can complete 1 week of optional practical hours within your field of study. This is done just after either N1 or before N3 and you will be given a certificate and logbook of the components that you have completed. 

Foundational Program, 3 Days (Applicable to all students)

Workshop Health & Safety Theory: Full safety training program covering OHSA CT

  • Impact of building practices on the Environment (ISO 14001)
  • Safety in handling of Structural Equipment AND  Machinery (OSHAS 18001)

Basic hand tools: 

  • Use of hand tools and portable equipment applicable to specific trades
  • Portable machinery – Grinding machine / Cut-off machine / Drilling machine
  • Chisels /Hammers/Screwdrivers/Scribers/Punches/Socket Wrenches/Files/Vernier/ Callipers/Clamps
  • Measurement and marking – The application of “Marking Blue”
  • Basic Arc Welding
  • Assembly using space welding
  • Assembly using vertical welding

Applied practical hand skills:

  • Cutting of sample work pieces – Use of grinders and cut-off machine
  • Marking and measurements – Use of Vernier
  • Drilling and thread tapping – Use of centre punch and drilling sizes with wrench tapping
  • Assembly of work pieces
  • Pipe threading / Plate rolling and guillotine work

Advanced Civil, Building & Plumbing Systems (5 Days)

Advanced Plumbing & Alternative Water Systems:

  • Modern connection systems to water supply systems
  • Pipe bending
  • Installation of residential grey-water recovery systems
  • Alternative to installation of gutters and downpipes

Site Surveying:

  • Survey and set out on sloping land and terraces.

Advanced Building techniques:

  • Use of Lintels / Building bonds and Arches
  • Building Columns and Piers, retaining walls.
  • Build brick wall and fit window frame and door frame
