Field Trip - Maboneng

Maboneng, a Sotho word meaning “place of light”, is the name chosen for this precinct, and it is really quite apt when thinking how its transformation has turned it from being an area that was once considered a no go zone into a cultural hub that boasts some truly unique architectural elements. A number of the old rundown industrial building have been transformed in restaurants, art galleries, retail shops and of course accommodation. One of the main reasons we took a trip to Maboneng was to view the recently launched Drive Lines building. This building has 104 apartments and is constructed entirely out of upcycled shipping containers, making it one of the largest constructions of its kind. The students were taken on a tour of the surrounding area going through arts on Main and being shown a number of various residential complexes that have been developed around Maboneng. We were also given insight into some very exciting new projects that are under way.
